Spring Breeze, Taiwan

Film Summary|

While living in the U.S., my nephew — a young Taiwanese man — struggles with the fragmented nature of his national identity. Through music and the modern history of Taiwan’s White Terror era, he begins to rediscover what was lost.

The story of 228 Incident victim Lee Shun Fa will be told through shadow puppetry by Spica Wobbe, a Taiwanese American puppeteer, with guidance from his family member, Tania Lee, who is an educator and musician, serves as a consultant. We will also collaborate with Taiwanese immigrants whose families were impacted by 228 and the White Terror, collecting materials and oral testimonies. Additional footage will be provided by Talking Taiwan from the 228 Memorial.

Spring Breeze is part of the feature documentary Hear, Eat, Home by Taiwanese American director Hsuan Yu Pan.  We also plan to make the story a stand-alone short documentary. The larger film follows immigrant artists, led by Syrian clarinetist Kinan Azmeh, as they explore identity, displacement, and belonging through collaborative art and shared meals.

Topic Summary|

Spring Breeze explores how Taiwanese people have long resisted oppression through intimate dinner table conversations. Taiwan endured martial law until 1987 and language bans until 1988. Despite its vibrant democracy today, the trauma of repression lingers, with generations growing up fearing their Taiwanese identity. The film also highlights the global crisis of endangered languages, including those in Taiwan, and how language loss impacts intergenerational connection and self-worth. With this film, we aim to reclaim identity without shame, preserve culture and language, and honor Taiwan’s journey.
