Hsuan Yu Pan is a Taiwanese American documentary director and editor based in New York City whose work explores immigrant lives, historical memory, and transnational identity. Trained in editing at The Edit Center and shaped by nearly a decade as a segment producer at BRIC TV, she approaches filmmaking through structure as much as through image—building meaning in the space between moments.

Working fluidly between directing and editing, Hsuan sees the two roles as inseparable. As the sole editor of the feature documentary Rocky Flats, she constructed the film’s narrative architecture from the ground up, weaving investigative material with personal testimony to create emotional clarity within complex political terrain. She also served as additional editor on Netizens, deepening her engagement with stories at the intersection of gender, technology, and power.

Her editorial sensibility profoundly shapes her directing work, including her feature-in-progress Hear, Eat, Home and the short documentary ALONE/TOGETHER. She directs with the edit in mind—attentive to rhythm, silence, and emotional pacing—while editing with a director’s awareness of character and thematic intention. Across projects, she treats filmmaking as an act of listening: honoring lived experience while crafting cinematic narratives that resonate across borders and generations.
